 I
was presented with this project early in the design review
stage, and with the input of the owner, made some major
design changes that nearly doubled the size of the deck
and made it much more accessible by the addition of a
small footprint exterior spiral staircase.. This
eliminated all of the foot traffic through the house in
order to gain access, which had been a concern of the home
owner.
 At
this point we suggested to the owner that they consider
building a retaining wall off of the front of the property
that butted up against Washington Park, a large public
open space. This would make the yard a little more
private, improve security and allow their three Labs to
play out in front of the house.
I
feel that the changes that we made early on helped the
owner save money by avoiding costly change orders further
down the road when the project would have been more
advanced. I believe that the end result was the creation
of one of Denver's best deck spaces, adding to the charm
and livability of one of the most beautiful houses on the
